I put together a mp3 DVD of all my favorite AKB48 related music across all the groups, sub-groups, solo work, and stage songs. After I finished, I had realized that this was a pretty good batch of songs for helping share the AKB love with new fans.
Since i’m still pretty new to AKB fandom myself, and I remember how difficult it was to sort through their vast catalog of material (Which can be very hit-or-miss at first). I figure this list of songs would be a good starting point for people just getting into them, that might have similar tastes as mine…
Who is AKB48?
I’ll see if I can link some of the standout songs to youtube clips or something, so you can preview them before you get them, and I’ll divide it up by groups, teams, and stages.
AKB48
This is the main group.
It’s a little confusing at first, but basically all the AKB48 singles/songs don’t feature all the members, as they are usually selected by a popular vote by fans (with ballots available inside certain CD’s). This is referred to as the “Senbatsu” members, and typically are the core members that have the most fans from all the Teams, and usually featuring key members from their Sister groups based in other citys, such as SKE48, NMB48, and HKT48.
Alot of the times there are less popular members featured as sub-groups on the b-sides of singles. Also, from time to time they select members for singles via other methods, such as “Janken” (Paper-Rock-Scissors) Tournaments to mix things up a bit.
You can think of these as kind of the All-Star members.

Team A is the first team that was assembled, however due to a “team shuffle” the original members were dispersed to other teams.
Currently Lead by founding member, and team captain Minami Takahashi, and featuring perennial fan favorite founding member Maeda Atsuko (who holds #1 position, and is known as “the face of akb”), Shinoda Mariko, and Kojima Haruna.
This team is known for their strength is all areas, and their stage songs tend to be more mature sounding. They have a lot of impact, and emotion. And due to having a lot of strong singers such as Minami Takahashi (usually referred to as the best vocalist), their vocals have power. They excel at ballads, and dramatic songs.

Team K
Assembled 2nd, the original formation of this team worked hard to not be overshadowed by Team A. They’re known for their dancing ability, and overall powerful performance.
Lead by team captain Akimoto Sayaka, Popular members Yuko Oshima (voted #1 for Heavy Rotation Single Senbatsu, and solid #2 Ranking most times), Miyazawa Sae, and featuring former Team A founding members Minegishi Minami, and Tomomi Itano (My Favorite member).
This is my favorite team because their songs really appeal to me the most, because they’re very energetic and not too serious, and not too cutesy. it’s great music to work, or drive to.

AKB48 Team B
Team B is the 3rd group to form, and is known as the “Cute” team.
Currently lead by team captain Kashiwagi Yuki , and featuring popular members Mayu Watanabe, Miyazaki Miho, Kitahara Rie, and former team K member Kasai Tomomi. This team is the epitome of the cute idol team.
They’re stage songs are typically very upbeat, and cute. This is the team you listen to when you need a pick-me-up, because it’s almost impossible not to feel happy listening to them. They’re stage songs are so good that they’re song “Team B Oshi” was featured on one of the main akb48 albums, and is consistantly voted as one of the best songs. They almost always have a theme song that introduces you to the members.
They’re live performance is full of life, and are a joy to watch. I can pretty much say that they’re stage CD’s are very consistent and feature some of the most catchy songs available on stage CD’s.
Just check out a few of these tracks, and you’ll see what i’m taking about….

AKBIDOLING!!!
This was a collaboration with rival idol group “IDOLING!!!”.
They joined up for some songs, and traded appearances on each of their own variety shows. Some great songs, and I recommend checking out Idolling!!! on their own as well.
89. AKBIDOLING!!! – チューしようぜ! (4:00)
90. AKBIDOLING!!! – モテ期の歌 (4:38)
Chocolove from AKB48
Chocolove was an early sub-group featuring Sayaka Akimoto, Sae Miyazawa, and Rina Nakanishi.
Although they were short-lived, they had some very good songs. if you like ballads they’re worth checking out.
91. Chocolove from AKB48 – Ashita wa Ashita no Kimi ga Umareru (4:25)
92. Chocolove from AKB48 – 彼のキッチン (4:26)
DiVA
Based on a slick, and stylish image DiVA has a very mature club orientated sound. Check them out if you did club based music, or late 90’s house.

94. DiVA – Fade out (4:42)
95. DiVA – Kiss made 100 Mile (4:14)
96. DiVA – 月の裏側 (4:26)
French Kiss
Featured on several anime soundtracks, they have a gentle, and calming sound. I like their more dancey/electronic songs, and I sometimes find myself listening to them, and thinking “why don’t I listen to them more?” because alot of their songs are really good!
97. French Kiss – Last train (Yuki Kashiwagi & Aki Takajo) (4:47)

Oshima Mai
As a founding member of Team A, she was one of the most popular members before leaving shortly before AKB48’s rise to mainstream domination. She’s enjoyed a decent solo career, and is worth checking out.
Her solo work is very upbeat, and the vocals are well done. ranging from Dance-pop, to Pseudo Ska, and R n’ B she’s got a very “Pop” sound.

Nattou Angel
This was a special unit made just for a ad campaign for a national Nattou (a food) day in Japan. it’s very silly, but the song is kind of hard to resist.
107. Nattou Angel – Nattou Angel (3:55)
NMB48
This is AKB48’s sister group based in Namba, Osaka.
I’ll admit i’m not that familiar with them at the moment, however, they’re singles are very good. They have a fun sound, and their dancing is really good.

no3b (No Sleeves)(ノースリーブス)
Featuring AKB48 founding members Minami Takahashi, Minami Minegishi, and Kojima Haruna. This is one of the more popular sub-groups.
Out of all the sub-groups, i’d say that their sound is the most accessible to people not used to idol music. They have a mature sound, and some of the best songs overall out of all of the sub-groups. You don’t have to be an akb48 fan to enjoy no3b!
They can range from dance/electronic, Rock, to powerful ballads. they shine the most in driving emotional songs. Takahashi’s powerful lower vocals really provide a stong foundation for their sound.
no3b is a “must listen” sub-group!
113. no3b – ジェシカはドアをノックしない (4:36)
114. no3b – Girls’ talk (3:54)

131. Queen & Elizabeth – Love□Wars (4:20)
SDN48
This is the mature themed version of akb48.
Some of the early members of akb48 were transferred to found SDN48. the members are all 20+ years old, and they’re overall theme is more “sexy”. (also it’s to be noted that SDN48 will be disbanded later this year after a final album.)
I’d say that their sound is very similar to K-Pop, because it’s more sexy, and typically club orientated. Check them out if most akb48 stuff is too cutesy for you, or you’re into K-Pop.
132. SDN48 – Ai Tyuseyo (4:38)

SKE48
AKB48’s sister group based out of Nagoya.
Featuring frequent Senbatsu members Matsui Jurina, Rena Matsui, and Yagami Kumi.
SKE48 is a popular alternative to AKB48. They’re a little younger overall, and they’re very energetic in their performances. In comparison SKE48 makes AKB48 look a little lazy sometimes. Their sound is generally more “idol-ish”, but they have alot of very good material, and alot of charisma. They shine the most on fast upbeat songs.
SKE48’s popularity has been on a consistent rise since their debut, and it’s easy to see why after checking out their songs, and performances.

Tomomi Itano (aka Tomochin)
A Founding member of AKB48, and my favorite member. (currently member of Team K)
I was a fan of Tomomi Itano’s solo work before I even liked AKB48 (in fact, I used to hate AKB with a passion). Her songs are just my kinda style, very dance/electro orientated. She reminds me of a young Namie Amuro, or Ayumi Hamasaki. She has a lot of potential, and she’s already had the most success out of any solo work out of any of the AKB48 members.
She excels at dancing, and fashion, and has a lot of expression in her singing. She has yet to release a full album, but has a handful of singles with excellent b-sides that could fill a release.
If you like Namie Amuro, check out this rising star!

166. Tomomi Itano – 愛にピアス (3:58)
Watarirouka Hashiritai and Watarirouka Hashiritai 7
This group is a revival of the Onyanko Club unit Ushirogami Hikaretai. but has since grown to 7 members (reason for adding 7 to the name afterwords). Mostly consisting of original Team B members such as Watanabe Mayu, Haruka Nakagawa, Oota Aika.
This is arguably the most popular sub-group right now that rivals no3b. They have a large catalog of music already, and many hits. Their sound is very happy, Energetic, cute and upbeat. They have a very catchy, infectious quality that’s hard to resist.
I’ve found that I enjoy a large percentage of their songs, and have no problem recommending them overall. I’m not sure that I can say that I like them more than no3b, but I suppose it’s a matter of mood. if you need to be cheered up listen to Watarirouka, if you’re feeling more serious listen to no3b.
